On February 27th, 2016 reporter David Garrick released the latest news for San Diego’s local community. According to the San Diego Union Tribune, the city is in the midst of fighting to reinvent and reorganize the city fleet.
The main issue at hand is the report of neglect on the the city fleets vehicle maintenance. This covers all fire engines, patrol cars, street sweepers and more. The statistics show that 1600 out of the total 4100 vehicles are reported to be in good shape or better. 700 of those vehicles need to be replaced immediately and 1100 should be considered for replacement due to their age and deterioration of the car.
Deputy Chief Operator Ron Villa said, “the city has historically kept vehicles until they literally wear out and fall apart”
It has been left to the city fleet to come up with a strategy plan to enact a remission of all vehicles that must be replaced. The cost of this new management plan is said to be brand new to the city and will become a costly experience. The expense of this new plan has averaged out to already a price tag of $85 million to replace just the 17% that must be taken off the road immediately and be replaced.
City officials enraged by the stressful situation are commenting that these problems stem from the Fleet Division. A total transformation of the fleet must start from the ground up. In response, the attitude of the rather pricey plan is for the city to set its goals of achieving an aggressive climate action plan for San Diego.
The data indicates all of these vehicles are in the benefit of the people. Over a half of the vehicles are purposed for public safety, while the rest are purposed for all city functions. Although the new management plan will be a brand new and rough beginning for the people of San Diego, by the statistics, the safety of the community is what the main focus should lie on.
