Pope Francis told reporters aboard the papal airliner that Donald Trump was not Christian.
“A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian,” Francis said.
While this is an oversimplification of the immigrant issue facing American’s on the Pope’s part, the must amusing part is those on that have taken to the comment as an indictment of American values for not loving our neighbor.
This meme began to circulate on Facebook as an apparent example of the hypocrisy of the Pope.
Obviously, the Pope was speaking in a very non-literal way. He wasn’t advocating building pedestrian bridges across the Rio Grande river along the southern border. The point, while not very eloquently stated, was that in the Pope’s view Christians are not meant to cause divide but rather be a source of unity. He used Trump’s insistence on building a wall as a grounding point to launch his metaphor.A simple advocation for preventing life becoming “us” against “the other.”
A simple advocation for preventing life becoming “us” against “the other,” has now become a perfect example of a non-story becoming a story. The Pope, in essence, advocated the Christian message that is held universally, “love each other.”But, due to the wonderful spin-cycle we’re in, here we are talking about it like its somehow an indictment against Americans.
