Obama works toward friendship with Cuba

This week, the president took another step forward in the long process toward America’s reconciliation with Cuba. After 33 years of Cuba being known as a sponsor of terrorism, the US began the process on April 14 to remove the country from a list of terrorist nations – what is likely becoming an increasingly long list.

The reason? The Miami Herald reported that Obama approached Congress, explaining that Cuba “had not provided support for international terrorism during the preceding six months and Cuba had provided assurances that it would not support acts of international terrorism in the future.”

Congress still has to approve this request, but it is the beginning of a new era for Cuba, and in turn, for American-Cuban relations.

For more information, watch history being made as Obama and Castro discuss their plans to move forward. Leaders of these two countries have not talked face-to-face in over half a century.
