The late Maya Angelou, well-known and well-loved author, speaker and poet, was known for many beautiful, inspiring sayings. However, the newest U.S. Postal Service stamp portraying a quote of hers is not one of them.
The quote reads, “A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.”
The Washington Post reported that children’s book author Joan Walsh Anglund was the original author of the quote, who published it in her book of poems “A Cup of Sun,” and that the USPS got it wrong, as apparently many do.
A Postal Service spokesperson told the Washington Post, that “numerous references” attributed the quote to Angelou. Even President Obama had quoted it as Angelou’s in his 2013 National Medal of Arts presentation.
An unveiling ceremony Tuesday, April 7 was held to honor the late Angelou and reveal the stamp. However, with news confirmed that the quotation on the stamp was not hers, the stamp will not be reissued. Oddly enough, this did not stop guests like Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey from attending the unveiling, where the misattributed stamp was still portrayed.
